Lancashire in six numbers: crime, prices, broadband and air, council by council (2026)

The same official figures for every Lancashire council area, side by side

Straight answer

Ribble Valley has Lancashire's lowest recorded crime (39.2 offences per 1,000 residents), highest average house price (£285,610) and least deprivation. Burnley has the highest crime (107.4), lowest average price (£135,012), fastest price growth (+8.6%), best gigabit coverage (96.0%) and most deprivation (3rd of 296 in England). Wyre has the cleanest air at 5.2 µg/m³ PM2.5; West Lancashire has the lowest gigabit coverage at 85.6%.

Lancashire's 12 council areas can look very different on paper. This post sets the same six official measures side by side for each of them, so you can see how they compare before you narrow a search.

Every figure comes from Jackson's league tables, which are built from official open data. Each one describes a whole council area, not a street.

Recorded crime

Offences per 1,000 residents a year (ONS / Home Office police recorded crime, year ending March 2026). All 12 Lancashire areas are ranked.

Three Lancashire areas sit in the lowest-crime 60 of England and Wales. Rates are per resident, so town centres with lots of visitors and workers can read higher than the risk to someone living there. Our guide on checking crime rates explains how to read the numbers for a single street.

Average house price

HM Land Registry UK House Price Index, July 2026. Cheapest to dearest:

  • Burnley £135,012 · Hyndburn £141,430 · Pendle £152,798 · Preston £188,629
  • Wyre £193,650 · Rossendale £199,759 · Lancaster £202,966 · Chorley £213,246
  • South Ribble £213,267 · Fylde £235,793 · West Lancashire £236,194 · Ribble Valley £285,610

The gap between the cheapest and dearest area is about £151,000: an average Ribble Valley home costs roughly twice an average Burnley one. A low average can reflect the mix of homes and demand, so it is a starting point for a search, not a verdict on a place.

Price change over 12 months

Same source. Every Lancashire area rose.

  • Rising: Burnley +8.6%, Hyndburn +8.5%, Pendle +8.3%, Preston +7.3%, Fylde +7.2%, West Lancashire +5.2%, Lancaster +4.9%, Wyre +4.7%, Ribble Valley +3.9%, Rossendale +3.1%, Chorley +2.8%, South Ribble +2.7%

Gigabit broadband

Share of premises that can get a gigabit-capable connection (Ofcom Connected Nations, January 2026). Burnley leads at 96.0%, with Fylde (94.4%) and Pendle (94.3%) next. West Lancashire is lowest at 85.6%. Coverage can differ street by street, so check the postcode itself.

Air quality (fine particles, PM2.5)

Population-weighted background PM2.5 in µg/m³ (Defra modelled background PM2.5, 2024). Lower is cleaner. Cleanest: Wyre 5.2, Lancaster 5.3, Fylde 5.3. Highest: Chorley 6.3, Hyndburn 6.3. Every Lancashire area is above the World Health Organization's guideline of 5 µg/m³, as most of England is.

Deprivation

English Indices of Deprivation 2025 (MHCLG), ranked out of 296 English council areas, where 1 is the most deprived. Least deprived in Lancashire: Ribble Valley (272), South Ribble (213), Fylde (190). Most deprived: Burnley (3), Hyndburn (14), Pendle (15). Burnley is among the 10 most deprived council areas in England.

What the six numbers say together

Burnley has Lancashire's highest recorded crime rate, lowest average price, fastest-rising prices, best gigabit coverage and most deprivation. Ribble Valley has Lancashire's lowest recorded crime, highest average price and least deprivation. No single measure makes a place right or wrong for you; they tell you what to look at next.

Check a street, not just a district

District figures hide a lot of variation. The free Jackson check reads one postcode for flood risk, recorded crime, noise and the nearest station, and the full league tables for crime, prices, price change, broadband, air and deprivation show where each Lancashire area sits across England and Wales. More counties, same six numbers, on the blog. How Jackson scores an area explains the sources.

Data, not advice. Figures are official open data under the Open Government Licence (Ofcom data under Ofcom terms), for England & Wales, with the period shown for each.
